Football: Auburn in the NFL, Week 9 (Jones)

By: Griffin Kelly

A blocked punt? Check. intercept? Check. Landing? Check. Cornerback Jonathan Jones went all out for New England on Sunday and enjoyed a career day against the Colts.

That and more in this week’s NFL Rundown.

Carlton Davis, CB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay had lost its last three games and was in need of a big performance on Sunday when the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams came to town. Davis had a busy day with six tackles, including a key tackle for the loss earlier in the fourth quarter. He posted a 70.3 coverage level per PFF when taking on the Rams’ wide receiver group and played a big part in holding the Rams to just 13 points in a 16-13 win.

Jonathan Jones, CB, New England Patriots
Jones was a one-man wrecking crew against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. He blocked a punt, intercepted and returned a pass for a touchdown, disrupted another pass and added a tackle to end his day. The former Tiger had his second-highest defensive PFF of the season (75.6) and helped the Patriots hold their opponent to just three points. In nine games, Jones ranks 11th among all NFL DBs with a PFF score of 79.1.

Roger McCreary, CB, Tennessee Titans

In a much-anticipated matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs’ explosive offense, McCreary and the Titans rose to the challenge. The former All-American was second on the team with eight tackles and snagged his first NFL interception early in the third quarter. He also added a pass breakup, his third of the season. McCreary’s most impressive work may have come in the match against Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce.

Jamien Sherwood, LB, New York Jets

Sherwood only played a handful of snaps on Sunday but flew all over the field in a 20-17 win over division rivals Buffalo. He replaced the injured CJ Mosley midway through the first quarter and finished the game with five tackles, a season high, and grabbed a half sack, his first of the season. He led the Jets in total tackles in the first half. Sherwood’s 76.9 PFF score was the top 20 for all NFL linebackers in week nine.
