AP Preview:

In the dressing room euphoria after the Patriots’ 10-3 win over the Jets on Sunday, hints of Marcus Jones’ 84-yard punt return touchdown gallop echoed everywhere.

“Just keep walking home, brother!” the receiver called Nelson Agholor in Jones’ direction. “Don’t even drive – just walk!”

But on a day when New England’s special teams shone and defense dominance underscored their steady improvement throughout the season, it also showed how far behind the offense is as the Patriots prepare for their playoff push.

Since returning from three games with a sprained ankle, quarterback Mac Jones has led the offense with just two touchdown drives compared to 10 field goals.

He was efficient against the Jets on Sunday, completing 23 of 27 passes for 246 yards and a 104.6 passer rating. But the Patriots missed out on their two red-zone opportunities.

For the season, New England’s Red Zone efficiency rate is down to just 42.9%, ranking 31st in the NFL that begins Monday.

The Patriots have taken just 12 of 28 opportunities in 10 games.

As well as defense is playing this season, it will take offense to better finish trips down the stretch, with matchups against some of the league’s highest-scoring teams in the Bills (28.1 points per game), Bengals (26.5 ppg) and dolphins (25.2 ppg) still on deck.

That’s not lost on Mac Jones, who acknowledges that ending with TDs will be the biggest focus going forward.

“I think it’s super disappointing,” he said. “We put in too much work to achieve this result. I think it starts with us, the execution part, and then obviously we’re trying to figure something out here.

WHAT WORKS

One of the most underestimated aspects of the Patriots’ success on defense has been how well Jonathan Jones has flourished in his new role as outside cornerback.

Jones spent most of the first six seasons in New England in that slot, but switched during training camp after JC Jackson went free for the off-season.

The move has allowed the Patriots to get by with smaller players like 5-foot-9 Myles Bryant in the slot, forcing teams to choose their poison against Jones or Jalen Mills on the outside.

WHAT NEEDS HELP

A mid-20’s season wind chill could certainly have played a part. But something was wrong with the kicking game on Sunday.

Nick Folk had missed shots from 44 and 43 yards, his first time he missed multiple field goals in a game this season. The likely culprit is that he has been working with a new keeper, with Michael Palardy taking over the holding and punting duties with Jake Bailey on injured reserve with a rear problem.

The good news is that Palardy poked well, averaging 45.3 yards on seven kicks. But with Bailey sidelined for at least the next three games, Palardy’s grips need to improve fast.

TOP UP

Matt Judon. Another game and another great performance from the linebacker who is making his second year in New England even better than his first. He had 1 1/2 sacks on Sunday, taking his season total to a career-high 13 and beating his 2021 12 1/2.

STOCK DOWN

Jodni Cajuste. The Patriots’ utility man on the offensive line made a surprise start with the right tackle in place of a healthy Trent Brown. Cajuste struggled throughout the game, allowing Quinnen Williams and John Franklin-Myers to come through for a sack against Mac Jones in the first game of the game. He then allowed Williams to rejoin Jones in the second quarter.

INJURIES

The O-Line has to deal with several injured players. Center David Andrews played in his first game since returning from a concussion but left the team late in the first quarter with a hamstring injury. Isaiah Wynn, who normally started at Brown’s left tackle spot, also left the team with a foot injury.

KEY NUMBER

16.9 – The points per game allowed by the Patriots defense this season over 10 games this season. It’s the second lowest in the NFL at 16.2, behind only Dallas.

NEXT STEPS

The Patriots face their shortest turn of the season as they prepare to visit Minnesota on Thanksgiving. It’s part of a stretch where they will play three games over 12 days.
