The Pittsburgh Penguins are arguably the biggest story in the NHL right now for all the wrong reasons. Sidney Crosby’s team has lost seven straight, the most for the franchise since Sid was literally a kid in his rookie season.

Despite being mired in a terrible slump, the Penguins are -132 road favorites against the Capitals in a game that is 6.5 over/under. Check out all the Penguins vs Capitals odds below, including our best bet and your pick for this game.

It might seem a little surprising that the Capitals are underdogs given the Pens’ recent struggles. At +108 on the moneyline, Caps have an implied win probability of 48.08% while Pens have an implied win probability of 56.9% with moneyline odds of -132.

Pittsburgh Penguins surprise road favorites

There are several reasons why the Penguins being the chalk in this game is a bit staggering. First, the aforementioned porous seven-game skid, which is well deserved. Those seven losses include two losses to the sophomore Kraken and a loss to the Canucks, who have more points than one team in the Western Conference.

Also, the Penguins’ worst game came on the road this year when they have just one win in seven games. It’s not the type of play expected from a team that’s in the top 10 contenders for Stanley Cup odds.

One possible reason they’re favorites in the NHL odds on Wednesday could simply be the desperation with which you expect them to play. Although it’s still early days, the Pens are only ahead of the Senators and Blue Jackets in Eastern Conference standings.

If that streak goes on much longer, it could push them into a position that they can’t recover from.

Washington Capitals Betting Outlook

Washington has had a roller coaster season itself, but should be a bit lighter on the ice after a 5-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers. Ovechkin scored his eighth goal of the season in that one as he looks to maintain his place among the leaders in Rocket Richard Trophy odds.

Unfortunately for the Capitals, the injury bug has plagued their roster. Already deprived of top 6 forwards Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson to start the year, TJ Oshie, Connor Brown, John Carlson and Dmitry Orlov have joined the infirmary.

Of all these players, it looks like Orlov is the only one who can return anytime soon. If the Caps lose their top two defensemen, it will put additional pressure on projected starting goaltender Darcy Kuemper who has a 2.42 goals-against average and .919 save percentage in his first year with Washington after signing in as a free agent.

These teams have exceeded the betting total in six of their last seven meetings. In fact, the Penguins and Capitals have combined to go over total bets in 13 of their last 16 meetings.

With the Capitals missing a few key defensemen and the Penguins struggling to play the right way, this could be an old-school shootout early in the season between two rivals on TNT.

Penguins vs Capitals Pick & Prediction

Goals are what this game is screaming for and to add some more quirky stats to the mix, the over bets are 5-0 in the Penguins’ last five games on Wednesday and 6-0 in the last six games for the Penguins. Capitals Wednesday.

Over bets seem like a very logical choice in Penguins vs Capitals odds, but the best bet here is to take the Pens to break their losing streak and pick them on the moneyline. Pittsburgh is 16-8 against the Capitals after losing in their last 24 games. That’s a winning percentage of 66.7%.

On top of that, they really need a win and although the Caps somehow defeated the Oilers on Monday, the injuries are piling up too much for a decimated roster. The prediction here is that Crosby and the Pens are set for a game against their rivals and deliver a well-deserved win.

Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins moneyline (-132)
