Voters braved cold, wet weather in the Sacramento region Tuesday morning to vote in person or turn in their ballots for the 2022 midterm elections.

Noelle Roberts managed the voting site at the Pannell Community Center in the Meadowview neighborhood of Sacramento. She expected a slight turnout there due to the rain, which forecasters say could reach a quarter of an inch on Tuesday.

“This goes on all day and we close at 8 [p.m.]Roberts said. “Unless there is a break in the rain, some people will vote by mail or they will drop out because they don’t want to go out.”

As of 5:30 p.m. Monday, more than 221,000 votes were cast and processed in Sacramento County, approximately 26% of all registered voters.

Alesia Lewis voted in Oak Park on Tuesday morning. She said she was motivated to vote to support reproductive rights, especially California’s Proposition 1, which would add protections for abortion rights to the state constitution.

“[I’m] concerned about some of the directions the country is going with, you know, the overthrow of Roe v. Wade,” she said. “And even though we’re in California, it’s important to get out there and vote.”

In Midtown, Robert Mull was focused on frustration at rising inflation and the state’s response to COVID-19.

“I can only speak about myself personally, but the COVID response has destroyed my career and my livelihood,” he said. “I have a small business and the business is still functioning, but it’s nowhere near where it was in 2019.”
