2022 Patriots Preview: Staff predictions for record, MVPs, Super Bowl and more

In less than two weeks, the New England Patriots will start their 2022 season against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium. The September 11 regular-season opener has no shortage of question marks.

Most of these problems come from the Patriots offense. Will Matt Patricia and Joe Judge succeed as ‘co-facilitators’? Will Mac Jones take a step forward in Year 2? Can the offensive line hold up after a rough summer? If the Patriots hope to return to the playoffs, they need to answer a resounding “yes” to these three questions.

To get a sense of the team’s level of optimism, we asked the staff at NBC Sports Boston to put together their predictions for the 2022 season. Here are their picks for the Patriots’ final record, offensive and defensive MVPs, the biggest postseason storylines, and the Super Bowl.

Tom E. Curran, Patriots Insider

Record: 8-9. There are no playoffs.

Offensive MVP: McCork

Defensive MVP: Kyle Doug

Biggest storyline surrounding the Patriots after the season: How does Robert Kraft feel about the direction of the team after another late season loss and a postseason loss?

Super Bowl games and predictions: Buffalo and Tampa. After Bill missed the last-minute FG with 13 seconds left in regulation, we had another OT Super Bowl where Brady ripped Bill’s heart out and showed them – oozing, gooey, dripping and still Beats faintly – then gently tosses it to the ground and steps over it as he retires and into the arms of Gis waiting… TARA REID? ! ? ! ? !

New reality show. BradyNado is coming this summer.

Phil Perry, Patriots reporter

Record: 9-8. There are no playoffs.

Offensive MVP: Mike Jones

Defensive MVP: Christian Balmore

Biggest storyline surrounding the Patriots after the season: The Patriots still don’t have enough defense to slow the Bills down. Two losses to Buffalo in the final six weeks of the season cost them a playoff chance.

Super Bowl games and predictions: Bill Rams. The Bills won 30-27.

Mike Feige, Boston Sports Tonight

Record: 7-10, no playoffs.

Offensive MVP: Ramon Stevenson

Defensive MVP: Christian Balmore

Biggest storyline surrounding the Patriots after the season: Will Kraft Force Bill Belichick to Hire a Real Coordinator?

Super Bowl games and predictions: Denver and Tampa. Booker won.

John Thomasey, Red Sox insider

Record: 7-10, no playoffs.

Offensive MVP: Mike Jones

Defensive MVP: Jack Jones

Biggest storyline surrounding the Patriots after the season: Oh my gosh, what if Mike Jones had a little low ceiling? The only way the Patriots can overcome the post-Brady coaching malaise and talent acquisition malaise is if Jones jumps from a top 15-20 quarterback to a top 10. If he doesn’t, say hello to Purgatory.

Stealers Wheel does it best in a song used in the creepy torture scene in Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs”: “Here I am, with you Trapped in the middle together.”

Super Bowl games and predictions: Bill 45, Packers 10

Right wide…Thurman Thomas’ lost helmet…13 seconds – is there any longer pain than those crazy fans in Buffalo? Their ordeal ended this winter, in a Super Bowl gift from MVP Josh Allen against Aaron Rodgers and the Pack, who faced Tom Brady in the NFC Championship Game Brady’s Buccaneers won the weird old quarterback fight against Joe Rogan and Tony Robbins shared the braised elk in the commissioner’s box.

Michael Hawley of Boston Sports Tonight

Patriots Final Record: 10-7, playoffs.

Offensive MVP: Devant Parker

Defensive MVP: Christian Balmore

Biggest storyline surrounding the Patriots after the season: Similar to 2021, they are in a strong position in early December. In fact, they are tied (8-3) with Buffalo in Gillette’s Thursday night football game. They lost that game and three of their last five games in the playoffs. Over time, they lost a record-setting 68-yard field goal in Denver’s wild-card game.

Super Bowl games and predictions: The 49ers beat the Bengals. You’ll recognize the game’s MVP: the handsome Jimmy Garoppolo.

Boston Sports DJ Bean Tonight

Record: 7-10. There are no playoffs.

Offensive MVP: Mike Jones (but he stepped back)

Defensive MVP: Christian Balmore

Biggest storyline surrounding the Patriots after the season: Does Belichick have plans? We’re not going to stop talking about the offense, including whether Jones was the guy or the coaching staff let him down.

Super Bowl games and predictions: packers bill

Darren Hartwell, NBCSportsBoston.com

Record: 9-8. Needing just one win in the past two games to make the playoffs, the Patriots lost to the Dolphins and Bills in Weeks 17 and 18 and barely missed a wild-card opportunity.

Offensive MVP: Mike Jones. Rhamondre Stevenson received an honorable mention for being a threat in the passing game, but despite the lack of a true offensive coordinator, Jones managed to improve his stats in Year 2. This is the value of MVP.

Defensive MVP: Jaylen Mills. Mills was a big reason why the Patriots won nine games and became the lockout corner of New England’s loss at JC Jackson. Cornerback is a bright spot for the Patriots in 2022, with Mills leading the charge.

Biggest storyline surrounding the Patriots after the season: “Hey, it could have been worse…”

Patriots fans won’t get excited about their team missing the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. But after some early growing pains, the Jones-Matt Patricia-Joe Judge experiment shows signs that progress can be made in 2023. At least the arrows are pointing in the right direction.

Super Bowl games and predictions: Bills 27, Bucs 20. The Chiefs have been Buffalo’s downfall for the past two playoffs, but Josh Allen finally took the next step and faced off against longtime AFC East rival Tom Brady. Brady nearly led the late comeback, but the Bills held on to win their first Super Bowl and give Scott Norwood some peace.

Nick Goss, NBCSportsBoston.com

Record: 9-8, no playoffs.

Pats Offensive MVP: Mike Jones

Shoot defensive MVP: Christian Balmore

Biggest storyline surrounding the Patriots after the season: They have a lot of salary cap space in 2023 and how they’re going to use it because there’s going to be a lot of roster weaknesses to work out.

Super Bowl games and predictions: pirates beat bill

Justin Leger, NBCSportsBoston.com

Record: 8-9. There are no playoffs.

Offensive MVP: Ramon Stevenson

Defensive MVP: Matt Juton

Biggest storyline surrounding the Patriots after the season: Bill Belichick’s work will be called into question. He needs to play well in the 2023 offseason and improve in the 2023 regular season, or it’s time for a regime change.

Curran: 2022 Patriots season preview and predictions

Tom Brady and the Buccaneers won another Super Bowl while the Patriots failed to miss the playoffs for the second time because his departure wouldn’t go well in New England.

Super Bowl games and predictions: Pirates 31, Bill 27

Kevin Miller, VP of Content

Record: 9-8. There are no playoffs.

Offensive MVP: Mike Jones

Defensive MVP: Matthew Juton

Biggest storyline surrounding the Patriots after the season: How do they build a roster that can compete in today’s NFL? The defense will need the biggest overhaul. Can they bring in any impactful playmakers on the defensive end?

Super Bowl games and predictions: Bengals vs Rams – Rams win again 38-35 in classic

Jason Levine, NBCSportsBoston.com

Record: 7-10. There are no playoffs.

Rob Snyder, Producer, Quick Slants

Record: 7-10, no playoffs.

Offensive MVP: Ramon Stevenson

Defensive MVP: Christian Balmore

Biggest storyline surrounding the Patriots after the season: Shall we give Belichick another year?
