CANYON, Texas- Senior Guard Julius Brown lost 21 points to lead the No. 25 West Texas A&M Buffs (3-2, 1-0) to an 83-77 win over UAFS (4-3, 0-1 LSC) in Thursday night’s opener of the Lone Star Conference.

The leaders

Four players achieved double-digit scores, led by the Ohio product with 21, along with five steals, two assists, a steal and a rebound. Brown went 6-on-12 from the field, 3-on-3 from deep and 6-on-8 at the charity stripe Damion Thornton scored 19 followed by Zach Toussaint (17) and Ahmed Mohammed (14). second grader Jesse Iweze brought six rebounds with him to team-high Ryland Holt pick up five.

How it happened

Brown led by a goal in the first 15 seconds before UAFS pulled away with a 6-0 run to take the lead. The Buffs moved away from the Lions lead before controlling the game at the 9-13 mark with a junior three-pointer Zach Toussaint.

WT capitalized on a 13-0 run to secure an 18-point lead before a Furah de Dieu Cadeaux layup ended the streak. De Dieu Cadaeux’s shot was quickly answered with a knight Damion Thornton before the Buffs extended their lead to 20 at halftime, 51-31.

The lead would rise to 21 with another 3-pointer from Toussaint until the Lions’ offense shifted momentum to bring the score back into single digits within five minutes of the end of regular time. Brown regained the ball after Courtney Murrell lost control, resulting in the game’s sixth field goal.

With 20 minutes left, UAFS cut the Buffs lead to five with David Ekezie’s dunk, but held on to WT’s defense to take the conference opener.

The stats

The Buffs shot 40.7% (22 to 54) from field, 34.8% (8 to 23) from deep and went 31 to 43 at the free throw line with 38 points off the bench to call with 24 rebounds, eight assists and seven steals. UAFS shot 53.1% (26 to 49) from the floor, 33.3% (5 to 15) from the three, and 76.9% (20 to 26) from the charity streak while snapping 37 boards, eight assists, and one steals. Nine players scoring for the Payton Brown-led Lions had a game-high 24 points in the 6-on-15 game with three rebounds, while Cameron Bush had a game-high with eight rebounds.
