Colorado quarterback Owen McCown will join the NCAA transfer portal after a season in Boulder. announced the signatory of 2022 on Thursday. McCown heads to the portal with four years of eligibility remaining after appearing in four games this season and retaining his redshirt. Colorado is coming off a 1-11 finish that saw the head coach fired Karl Dorrell mid season.

McCown saw his first collegiate action in week three of the 2022 season against Minnesota and started the Buffaloes’ next three contests against UCLA, Arizona and Cal. McCown was injured against the Golden Bears and sat out the remainder of the campaign, allowing him to wear the redshirt.

McCown completed 57 of 100 passes for 600 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Buffaloes last season. He also had 38 yards and two points on the ground.

McCown, a three-star prospect ranked No. 119 on Rusk High School’s 247Sports Composite Texas State Rankings, signed with the Buffaloes last winter via two other Power Five offers from Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.

His father Josh McCown was a third-round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft and threw for nearly 18,000 yards during his 19-year pro career. His uncle Luke McCown was a fourth-round pick in the 2004 draft and earned an NFL paycheck for 14 years. Another uncle, Randy McCown, played quarterback at Texas A&M.

The 2022-23 cycle for the NCAA transfer portal is scheduled for December 5-Jan. 19 windows for FBS athletes. Players eligible to participate outside the window include FCS players, transfers and those whose head coaches have been fired. McCown would thus be entitled to step in before Monday if he so desires.

It’s unclear who Colorado will hire to replace Dorrell. Jackson State Coach and NFL Legend Deion Sander said he was offered the job but has sought additional offers and has not yet made a decision about his future.

The NCAA launched the transfer portal on October 15, 2018, providing athletes with a way to explore their options. Players do not need to ask their coaching staff for permission to switch. All they have to do is ask for compliance to put their name on it. It usually takes 24-48 hours for a player to appear after their request. Schools are free to contact a player once their name appears on the portal.

While a player entering his name on the transfer portal means he intends to explore his options, it doesn’t necessarily mean he will leave. A player is free to withdraw his name at any time. However, schools are not required to award a scholarship to a player once they enter the portal.
