How Jimmy Garoppolo backup idea shocked Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch recalls

The idea to keep Jimmy Garoppolo as the 49ers’ backup quarterback originally came from John Lynch, and when he suggested it, coach Kyle Shanahan couldn’t believe what he had just heard.

Lynch joined Murph & Mac at KNBR 680 on Friday morning and recalled his conversation with Shanahan where the idea first came about.

“I don’t like to be sedentary, so I like to walk around the building and make sure everyone is doing well, and it’s Kyle most of the time, and we hang out a lot,” Lynch said. “That’s how we talk about the team, just being with each other. So we’ve been talking about, at one point, we’re talking about the whole room. The weird thing is, it’s not about the starters, but we have enough in that room?”

Lynch described his back-and-forth conversation with Shanahan, who was initially taken aback at the thought of having Garoppolo as a backup.

“I remember looking at him a little bit and I was like ‘Okay, we can…'”

“what did he say……?’

“I said: ‘You know, we can keep Jimmy.’ “

He continued: “How? There’s no way, he won’t do that.

I said: ‘Well, we don’t know. I’m not getting any calls and I’m shocked, who knows? Let’s marinate. “

After Shanahan slept with the idea, the 49ers coach changed his mind the next day. Having pitched the idea to Garoppolo and his reps, both sides are willing to make some effort if no outside opportunities arise after the third and final preseason game.

“[Kyle] Think it’s crazy and then come back the next day and (say) ‘You know what, you’re right. why not? ‘ I said: ‘Well, you see Jimmy a lot, he’s part of our list, so no tampering or anything, why don’t you introduce it? Lynch recalled. “So I think he did it at that point, and I think Jimmy’s initial reaction was ‘Look, I think we’ve taken an approach and we’re going to wait and see if this thing is perfect or not. The scene is turned on, but if not, that’s not a bad idea. When was that, I don’t know, maybe a month ago.

“Then it went down the road and their intentions were very clear…I remember [Garoppolo’s agent Don Yee] Say to me: ‘Hey, if this is your son, I’d advise him the same thing, which is to wait until after the last game of the preseason before we can make any decisions. Once that was done, there were discussions about what the contract would look like and all that and the parameters there, and it happened very quickly. “

From then on, the rest is history.

No one, not even Lynch and Shanahan initially thought that Garoppolo might show up in Week 1 against the Chicago Bears, but lo and behold, the 49ers have one of their own, if not the best backup four in the NFL. One of the quarterbacks.

One they wish they never had to use.
