“Normally, I’d run into the locker room,” Virginia Tech senior linebacker Dax Hollifield said, according to the Richmond Times.

“But I wanted to soak it all through and just walk through it. Let it cheer me on. Cheer us all. It’s embarrassing. It’s embarrassing.”

For Old Dominion, it was a repeat of the 2018 game against the Hokies, when the Monarchs beat the then-No. 13 Virginia Tech 49-35. Old Dominion is in his first year as a member of the Sun Belt Conference.

“Our kids are playing hard,” old Dominion coach Ricky Rahn said. “They deserved to win that game because they did what was necessary to win the game. When you play so hard, you create your own luck. That’s what we did tonight. I can’t stop for this team. The team is proud.”

Virginia Tech committed five turnovers on the night to give the Monarchs 17 points. The most critical turnover came at the end of the fourth quarter when quarterback Grant Wells was intercepted with 2:58 left. Wells finished 21-36 for 193 yards, 1 touchdown and 4 interceptions.

It’s not just mistakes that doom Virginia Tech.

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Hokies committed 14 penalties from 100 yards, the most for Virginia Tech in a decade.

“I was surprised how sloppy we were, I felt like they were putting pressure on it. And, you know, the attention to detail, that showed in the last scrimmage. It’s just more punishment than we got,” Puri said.
