2:44pm: The Phillies officially announced Castellanos’ position due to a right-sided strain. To make room for Guthrie, Phillies designate infielder Luis Garcia for distribution. Garcia is .227/.323/.338 in 1,407 career PAs in the Philadelphia farm system and is among the team’s top 30 prospects in MLB Pipeline due to his defense and 2021 A-ball offensive breakout Still No. 14. However, Garcia has struggled with both high-A and double-A this year.
12:21 noon: Phillies assign outfielder Nick Castellanos On the 10-day injured list.outfielder Dalton Guthrie His contract was picked from Triple-A, and another 40 roster changes were needed to accommodate Guthrie’s addition to the active roster.
Castellanos left Friday’s game with an oblique injury, and manager Rob Thomson said the outfielder will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the problem. There is no word yet on the results of MRI, but even lower-grade oblique muscle problems usually result in at least minimal IL visits. Castellanos and the Phillies can only hope the injury is minor, or Castellanos could be in danger of missing the remainder of the regular season or even the playoffs.
It’s been an underwhelming season for Castellanos, who signed a five-year, $1 million free-agent deal with Philadelphia in March. The slugger hit just .265/.305/.397 in 531 games, resulting in a wRC+ of 96 under par. In recent weeks, however, Castellanos has looked more like his old self, with five homers and a .318/.348/.505 slash in his final 112 PA.
With Castellanos now gone, Matt Willing The numbers can see much of the action on the right, as Vierling has filled the void over the past few days and Castellanos has also been sidelined recently with a turf toe injury. Bryce Harper Still limited to DH duties and not an outfield option, leaving Vierling, utilities Nick Mattonnow Guthrie as the right playing time option.
Guthrie was the Phillies’ sixth-round pick in the 2017 draft, and the 26-year-old is now making his major league debut. He posted some middling numbers in his first three professional seasons, but in 2021 he’s good enough to move from Double-A to Triple-A, while Guthrie continues to perform at the top of the minor leagues. Over 513 total PAs in Triple-A in 2021-22, Guthrie hit .299/0.354/0.466 with 12 homers and 23 steals (30 total chances).
In addition to outfield depth, Guthrie also provides the Phillies with some versatility around the diamond, which could hint that Marton might get more work as an outfield player. Guthrie has primarily played midfield and right field in Triple-A this season, with only a handful of games as second, third and shortstop. However, Guthrie was originally drafted as an infielder and won’t play professionally in outfield until 2021.
