Piastri opens up on “upsetting” and “bizarre” Alpine F1 behaviour

Following Fernando Alonso’s shock decision to join Aston Martin next season, Alpine issued a statement shortly after that said Piastri would step up to become Esteban Ocon’s team-mate.

But the team’s claims were quickly rebuked by Piastri, who tweeted that the team had made a statement without his consent.

Speaking on F1’s official website after confirming he would join McLaren in 2023, Piastri expressed his disappointment at Alpine’s public move.

“my decision [to join McLaren] made in advance [of Alonso’s departure]which makes Alpine’s announcement perhaps even more confusing and disturbing because we’ve told the team that I’m not going ahead,” he said.

“It was very frustrating because the announcement was wrong and it robbed me of the opportunity to say goodbye to everyone at Enstone.

“I’ve been with the team for a little over two and a half years and the rest of the team finds it very frustrating for me to leave in this way.

“I haven’t had a chance to say goodbye yet, this is something I want to do to express my gratitude to all the men and women of Enstone.”

Piastri also revealed how embarrassing it was for him, knowing he had informed Alpine that he was told during the mock session that the team was making an announcement.

Team principal Otmar Safnaul revealed over the weekend that Piastri “smiled and said thank you” when he heard the news.

Reflecting on that moment, Piastri said: “It was a strange and frankly disturbing episode.

“It was done in public in front of some team members who didn’t know the situation and I didn’t want to create a scene in front of them.

“Once we spoke privately, I told Otmar what our position was and what he had been told many times before that. It was a huge surprise to me to announce this.”

He added: “This is the biggest moment of my career and probably the biggest moment of my life so far. It was my management’s fault to announce it wrongly and I feel like we have to correct it if we don’t deny it The announcement also has potential legal implications.

“This is not intended to point out or in any way go beyond the facts. The last line is quite forceful, but according to the CRB’s ruling, it shows that this is purely a fact.”

Piastri is understood to have been pushing for a solid deal from Alpine, but said the team’s reluctance to commit while he was a free agent meant that McLaren’s options were progressing.

“The lack of clarity about my future ultimately led to a breakdown of trust and I feel the very attractive offer McLaren has made and the positive deal with them so far is where I feel McLaren is the best place for me to grow in the future. All reasons,” he said.

“CRB ruling confirms I have no contract for 2023 season [with Alpine].

“I’m free to choose my own destiny – I think McLaren is a great opportunity. They’ve been very forthright, very enthusiastic and enthusiastic about having me.

“Honestly, my future with the Alpine team lacks clarity.

“They have said publicly that they want to continue working with Fernando for at least a year or two. I respect that.

“But after a year with my hopes firmly pinned on the Alpine seat and the lack of clarity, like Fernando, there’s a bit of an odd feeling in the negotiation, and I think it’s a bit of a stretch for me. not the right decision [to stay around]. ”
