Retro Studios Once Pitched a Zelda Spin-Off Game to Nintendo Called Heroes of Hyrule

While Retro Studios is best known for its work on Metroid Prime games, the developer has occasionally gone out to develop for other Nintendo franchises. This includes titles like Donkey Kong Country Returns for Wii and Mario Kart 7 for the 3DS. The studio is once again working to develop the next one Metroid Prime entry, although there have been some reports indicating that it is still in the early stages of development. Also, a game originally developed for the studio recently came to light, being a spin-off The legend of Zelda series known as Heroes of Hyrule.

This isn’t the first time Retro Studios has been working on a Zelda spin off before it was canceled, as evidenced by some concept art leaked last year involving a playable male Sheikah for a game known as Project X. This would involve the player following this Sheikah’s journey through a dark timeline, which would also explore the origin of the Master Sword. DidYouKnowGaming covered Project X in her latest video, but she also managed to discover another spin-off, Heroes of Hyrulecomplete with concept art and a brief synopsis of the plot.

Towards the end of DidYouKnowGaming’s video regarding Retro Studios’ canceled Sheikah game, they said that while they were talking to former studio members they got hold of the aforementioned. Heroes of Hyrule, which would have been a completely different kind of spin-off. According to the author of the video, Dr. Lava, it would have been a strategic role-playing game, similar to Final Fantasy Tactics.

The chronology of the history of the canceled Heroes of Hyrule was also included, where Link continues to rescue Zelda, but Ganon ambushes Link and captures him. He would play three playable characters: Goron, Rito and Zora, similar to Breath of the wildthe Champions. These three friends of Link then embark on a journey to save him. Eventually, Ganon is defeated and 100 years pass. Unlike Breath of the wild where Link remains young due to a shrine, he ends up growing old in an old man who runs an antique shop.


Dr. Lava and the DidYouKnowGaming video also showed some concept art, including how the matches would be structured, along with the player’s perspective. Hyrule concept art was also shown, along with what the playable characters and Link would be like in this Retro Studios. Zelda game.
