7:11 PM, “It truly saddens us all:” More on the death of longtime AHSAA official Greg Brewer at this link. Again, continued prayers for his family and the AHSAA family.

7:06 PM, That was quick:

7A No. 1 Central-Phenix City already up 7-0 on Enterprise

Westminster leads North Jackson 6-0

5A No. 1 UMS-Wright leads LeFlore 7-0. Cole Blaylock, who committed to South Alabama on Thursday, scores his 7th rushing TD of the season for the Bulldogs.

Hoover 7, Spain Park 0 … Brewer Smith with a 37-yard TD pass to Freddy Dunson.

7:05 PM, What a way to start: The game ball is delivered to Orange Beach tonight. Makos hosting Jackson.

7 PM, Wildcats on the road: Second game of a brutal two week stretch for No. 9 Enterprise. Wildcats hosted No. 2 Auburn last week. Tonight, they are on the road at No. 1 Central-Phenix City.

6:56 PM, Speaking of rivals: Hoover and Spain Park going at it tonight with a new head coach on the sideline for each team — Hoover’s Wade Waldrop, Spain Park’s Tim Vakakes.

6:53 PM, Big crowd: Big crowd on hand tonight for Bob Jones vs. James Clemens. James Clemens has won the last four Madison Bowls. Bob Jones has a 6-4 lead in the crosstown rivalry.

6:45 PM, Is tonight the night? Surprisingly, three-time reigning 7A champ Thompson is 0-2 after high-profile losses to Buford, Ga., and Lipscomb (Tenn.) Academy. Mark Freeman’s Warriors try to get on track in Region 3 play tonight at Vestavia Hills.

6:37 PM: Road game: Shades Valley travels to Oxford tonight. Beautiful scene there. The Mounties are 2-0 after their overtime win over Fairfield last week. Oxford is 1-1, having lost against McAdory and beaten Huntsville.

6:27 PM, A sad note to start: The AHSAA announced tonight that former Director of Officials Greg Brewer has passed away at age 65. Brewer began officiating in 1976 and joined the AHSAA as an assistant director in 1985. He became Director of Officials in 1988 and remained in that position through 2016. Upon retirement, he moved to Huntsville to be near his family.

“It truly saddens us all,” said AHSAA Executive Director Alvin Briggs. “He has meant so much to the AHSAA, its member schools and they thousands of contest officials he mentored and trained throughout his career as the AHSAA Director of Officials. Our heart and prayers go out to his immediate family, our own AHSAA family, and to the officiating family he helped create across this state.”

6:23 PM, Interesting note: An interesting note from my buddy Randy Kennedy this week. Alabama teams played 23 games against out-of-state teams in the first two weeks, going 11-12 overall in those games. Alabama was 7-2 against teams from Florida, 1-0 against Mississippi, 1-1 against Tennessee but just 2-10 against teams from Georgia. Ouch.

6:19 PM, Huge game in Cullman: Bearcats host rival Hartselle. Cullman is 2-0 after wins over Mars Hill (13-10) and Jasper (42-21). Hartselle also is 2-0 after wins over Austin (45-17) and Jackson-Olin (39-6). Bryan Moore’s Tigers are ranked No. 9 in this week’s ASWA Class 6A poll.
