
FRISCO, Texas — McNeese footballers Kiana Kukaua, Rachel Jungand Magalie Depot were named to the 2022 Southland Conference All-Academic Team, the league announced on Friday. All three players were called up to the second team.
Kukaua, a junior midfielder from Valencia, California, compiled a 3.13 GPA in Civil Engineering. Kukaua played and started 14 games for the Cowgirls this season and was credited with two goals and three assists for seven points before being injured.
Young is a junior forward from Surprise, Arizona who achieved a 3.21 GPA in biology. Young also played in 14 games and earned 12 starts. She led the Cowgirls with five goals and 22 shots that year while tying for a team-high 12 points. She was also credited with two assists.
Depot is a junior forward from Montreal, Quebec, Canada who has a 3.42 GPA in biology with a chemistry minor. Though Depot has only played 10 games this season due to injury, he led the team with 12 points and a team-high four assists. She was also second on the team with four goals and was credited with 14 shots that year.
Southland Conference All-Academic Teams are selected by a head coach, a sports information director and an academic/compliance officer from each school. The Student-Athletes of the Year are selected by an awards committee consisting of an administrator from each member school. Voting for your own athletes is not permitted.
To qualify for an academic award, an athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 during the semester prior to the athletic championship, have completed at least one full academic year at the nominating school prior to the current season, and have attended at least 50 percent of the Team competitions during the last completed season.
Nominated Student-Athlete of the Year must have a minimum GPA of 3.20 and have competed in athletics for at least two years at the nominating institution.
First Team All-Conference athletes who meet the academic-only nomination criteria and are nominated for the academic award are automatically designated as First Team All-Academic selections.
