Drugstore giant Walgreens has introduced 24/7 same-day delivery in stores across the country via Walgreens.com and the Walgreens mobile app.
The Deerfield, Illinois-based chain announced Thursday that it is the first health and wellness retailer to offer 24/7 on-demand delivery through its website and app. Through the service, customers can order from more than 27,000 convenience items — from groceries, snacks and beverages to over-the-counter medicines, personal care products and household items — and have them delivered to their doorstep within an hour.
Walgreen’s 24-hour same-day delivery is available on orders over $35 at nearly 400 24/7 stores nationwide. When visiting Walgreens.com/SameDayDelivery or opening the Walgreens app, customers select the nearest 24-hour location to place their order and it will be fulfilled when it’s in delivery range, Walgreens said. Members of the myWalgreens free loyalty program can also earn and redeem Walgreens cash rewards and take advantage of personalized digital coupons and savings through the 24-hour service.
To support the service launch, Walgreens is offering customers free shipping on orders $20 or more through December 10th by using the code NOW20.
“Walgreens recognizes that concerns about health and well-being are not limited to business hours and that needs can arise at any time of the day. That’s why we’re always looking for ways to enhance the customer experience with convenient and trusted solutions,” said Stefanie Kruse, group vice president of digital commerce at Walgreens, in a statement. “As the go-to place for customers to go for their last-minute needs, we know they value having the items they need most right at their doorstep, every hour of the day.”
Walgreens noted that the expansion of 24-hour service reflects its ongoing efforts to increase online shopping convenience. In November 2020, the pharmacy retailer introduced 30-minute in-store, curbside and drive-thru window pickup, followed by launching same-day delivery in just one hour in May 2021.
A 30-minute pickup guarantee that will cover the cost of shopping baskets if the order isn’t ready within that time frame is currently being trialled in New Mexico, Oklahoma and select Texas markets, Walgreens said.
In addition, Walgreens offers same-day delivery of prescriptions via Walgreens.com/PrescriptionDelivery, the Walgreens app, or by calling the local store. Patients can sign up for text alerts that will notify them when their scripts are ready. Delivery fees vary by location.
Convenience-driven delivery has steadily gained traction among online shoppers looking for staples and last-minute necessities locally. As of September 2021, Walgreens was among a group of retailers — including Kroger, 7-Eleven, CVS Pharmacy, Rite Aid and Safeway — offering 24/7 delivery through the Convenience Hub, a new product experience on the Instacart Marketplace. With the service, Instacart also extended hours for retailers that aren’t open 24 hours a day, but instead work late into the night or into the early morning.
In addition to Instacart, Walgreens also partners with DoorDash, Postmates, Uber Eats and Shipt for on-demand delivery service. In late October, Walgreens and DoorDash partnered to offer free prescription supply of Pfizer’s Paxlovid, a COVID-19 antiviral drug used to treat mild to moderate cases of infection in certain patients at high risk of progression to severe COVID-19.
